Rainier CherriesBiography: Elaine Gardner was born in Barnstable, MA. and attended Swain School of Design in New Bedford. After a postgraduate year at Swain, she spent a period of independent study in Italy. Years later, a tutorial with still-life painter Ann Hartley of Eastham, MA. gave her the tools and inspiration needed to return to oil painting. Elaine and her husband Bart Guiney live in Yarmouth Port, MA.

“I paint exclusively with natural north light and in oil. I use various objects that I find interesting because of their color, shape or texture. These objects aren’t symbols, they have no “meaning” beyond the visual, and I’m not conveying a message. I try to make my compositions dramatic with shapes and lighting, with some objects receding and others protruding into the viewer’s space.”
